Dallas to Host First-Ever Pride Run

DALLAS–This year the annual Pride celebration will have a new event, an annual Pride Run. That’s thanks to members of Front Runners Dallas who are organizing the event. The inaugural Dallas Pride Run set for September 16 as an official part of the festivities for the Pride weekend.

“When FrontRunners approached us earlier this year we were excited for this opportunity,” says Travis Gasper of AIDS Interfaith Network (AIN), the group chosen as the beneficiary for the event.  “Other big cities have runs around their pride events, so we thought, why not Dallas?”

New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Saint Louis and Phoenix all have successful running events during Pride celebrations.

The 5K race is set to begin at Reverchon Park and travel the Katy Trail toward the the Blackburn bridge and back. A Paws Parade for dogs and their owners is also being planned as part of the event.

“It seemed like a natural fit for Front Runners Dallas,” says Lin Wang, organizer for the group. “It will help raise much needed funds for AIDS and provide Front Runners a way to go beyond the exercise and social aspects of the group and give back to the community.”

With HIV rates in Dallas County rising for the first time in five years, Gasper says the event is welcome support.

“Now is the time to refocus our community on prevention, and get some exercise doing it, which is something we can all be proud of.” Gasper says.

More information on the event can be found at http://www.dallaspriderun.org. The Front Runner Dallas walking and running group meets Saturdays at 8:30 at the statue of Robert E. Lee in Lee Park. Volunteers for the event can sign up on the web site.
